Hiawatha Avenue to West River Parkway

The Hiawatha to West River Parkway segment includes the Longfellow and Cooper neighborhoods.

Planning

Planning to determine the road and streetscape design of Lake Street between Hiawatha Avenue and West River Parkway has been underway since the summer of 2004.

A series of meetings attended by business owners and residents yielded a preference that Lake Street continue to have two traffic lanes moving in each direction, with no turn lanes or center medians. more »

Construction

Construction will resume in April 2008 in the 12-block segment between 36th Avenue South and West River Parkway. Lake Street is opened to four lanes of traffic from 27th Avenue east to West River Parkway.  All major roadway work is completed except for the placement of two inches of bituminous wearing course. The contractor will continue to work on installing trees, streetscape amenities, street lights, and traffic signals.

Work that will be completed in 2008 includes the placing of the two inches bituminous wearing course, installing landscape items not installed in 2007, electrical work and site amenities. The portion of Lake Street at the northeast corner of 27th Avenue will be completed in 2008. This includes removal of the pavement, grading, installing curb and gutter, installing concrete sidewalk and the bituminous pavement. Temporary lane closures will be required to complete the above work. more »
