Hiawatha to West River Parkway Planning

Planning to determine the road and streetscape design of Lake Street between Hiawatha Avenue and West River Parkway has been underway since the summer of 2004.

A series of meetings attended by business owners and residents yielded a preference that Lake Street continue to have two traffic lanes moving in each direction, with no turn lanes or center medians.

Meeting attendees expressed a desire for a “base level” of streetscaping that includes decorative lighting, tree plantings, scored sidewalks, trash receptacles, benches and bike racks.

Property owners also agreed to pursue city approval for an enhanced streetscape for the length of this segment. These enhancements include screen fencing at all surface parking lots facing Lake Street as well as additional shrub and perennial plantings.

Planning for this segment of the Lake Street reconstruction is essentially complete.
